Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and cook the tortellini according to the package instructions. Once cooked, drain, and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the garlic in olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced ham and cook until it’s lightly browned.
  4. Add the spaghetti sauce and tomato sauce to the skillet. Stir in the basil, sea salt, and cumin. Let it simmer for a few minutes to let the flavors blend.
  5. In a large casserole dish, spread a layer of the sauce at the bottom. Then layer half of the cooked tortellini on top.
  6. Add a layer of pepperoni over the tortellini, and then sprinkle a generous amount of Muenster cheese, pepper jack cheese, and mozzarella cheese.
  7. Repeat with another layer of sauce, tortellini, pepperoni, and cheese.
  8. Cover the lasagna with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and slightly golden.
  10. The aroma of the pizza sauce mixed with the cheese will fill your kitchen, making it hard to resist diving in immediately. Allow the lasagna to cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Trust me, the wait will be worth it!

Variations And Tips

Using tortellini filled with ricotta cheese makes this recipe easier to prepare than traditional lasagna. You can skip having to layer lasagna noodles and spreading ricotta cheese for each layer. For me, that’s a real time-saver.

My kids love pepperoni, but you can substitute or add a meat of your choice, or even keep it meatless. I’ve made this recipe with Italian sausage, ground beef, and shredded chicken. I had some diced ham on hand, so that’s what I used.

If you’re going meatless, bell peppers and ripe olives are two of my favorite toppings but feel free to include additional pizza toppings you like.

Experiment using other cheeses of your choice along with the mozzarella cheese. I had some Muenster and pepper jack cheese on hand, so I used them in this recipe.

As I’ve mentioned before, I buy block cheese and shred it, but sliced cheese can be layered on too.

Since I use traditional spaghetti and tomato sauces, I add fresh basil and cumin to cut the tomato acidity and naturally sweeten the sauce to my taste. If you like the taste of your spaghetti sauce right out of the jar or can, you can skip this or add the spices to taste.

FAQ’s

Can I make this recipe gluten-free?

Yes. You will need to use gluten-free tortellini. There is a company called “Taste Republic” that has an entire line of gluten-free pasta you can check out. My local grocery store carries it, but honestly, I’ve never tried it.

How can I store the leftovers?

Leftover lasagna can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days, ensuring it is properly sealed in an airtight container to help maintain its freshness.
