I’ll let you in on a little secret. Even though my blog is all about whipping up fun, affordable meals for the whole family, I get a bit of a thrill from cooking that I don’t often indulge in
Now, I could take the easy way out and spice up store-bought sauces, but let’s be honest, they never taste quite as good as homemade ones.
So, in this post, I will share my special Nashville Hot BBQ Sauce recipe with you. I’ll also tell you the secret ingredients I use to dial up the heat in this recipe a notch or two. Let’s dive in, shall we?
Cody’s Nashville Hot BBQ Sauce Recipe

Let’s talk about my homemade Nashville Hot BBQ Sauce. This is a punchy and red-hot blend of flavors, truly capturing the spirit of Southern barbecue but with a spicy kick.
Once you taste it, you’ll experience an explosion of flavors! It’s the perfect partner for grilled meats, sandwiches, or anything that needs a bold flavor with some ramped-up Nashville heat. I especially like it on pulled pork and chicken.

Ingredients
I love spicy, hot foods. But as a parent, I have to curb my love for all things fiery when cooking for my family, who aren’t the biggest fans of spicy food.
- 2 cups ketchup
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 1/4 cup of yellow mustard
- 1/2 cup of molasses
- 2 1/2 tablespoons of chili powder
- 3 tablespoons of cayenne pepper
- 1.5 tablespoons of Cuisinart Nashville hot seasoning

Directions
- Mix ingredients all together in a four-quart saucepan
- Cook on low heat for 2 hours, mixing every 5-10 minutes
- That’s it. That’s the end of my recipe for my homemade BBQ sauce recipe. Enjoy!!
Variations I’ve Used
You can use honey instead of molasses. It does taste sweeter, but still good. I prefer molasses.
A shot ( 1 ounce) of some good ole Tennessee whiskey won’t hurt either! Make sure to add it to the sauce – not the chef. 🙂
Additional Tips
Make sure to cook your barbecue sauce at low heat and slow for the best results!
Use the amounts of dry seasonings (cayenne pepper, chili powder, and Nashville hot seasoning) as a starting point. You can use more or less. Adjust the amount you use to taste while cooking.
I like mine pretty hot, but you may like it more or less spicy.
And there you have it — my Nashville Hot BBQ Sauce recipe! I’ve been holding onto this recipe for a while, but thrilled to share it now.
I hope you’ll love this fiery, flavorful sauce as much as I do. Remember, you can always adjust the heat level to your liking.
Happy cooking, and here’s to adding a little extra spice to your life!
