Do you love venison as much as I do? Then why not spice things up by making some Cajun venison burgers? They’re super simple to put together, and they taste great!

Living in an area where deer hunting is a ritual, it’s not surprising that I love venison. Those who have never tasted venison (deer meat) might be surprised to learn that with proper preparation, it tastes similar to beef and is healthier to boot.

Venison is leaner than beef and healthier because it contains less fat and cholesterol. but if you prepare venison like ground beef, you could wind up with tough, dry, gamey-tasting burgers.

In this article, I’ll teach you my secret to making juicy and delicious Cajun venison burgers using ingredients from your local grocery store.

This juicy Cajun venison burger recipe is super simple and takes only about an hour from prep to table.

Cajun Venison Burgers With Cheese

Great-tasting venison burgers start with the meat. When my butcher grinds venison, I ask to mix it with 20% pork fat or ground pork. Either works fine.

Deer meat (venison) is lean, and adding pork fat prevents it from becoming too dry when cooking. You might prefer to add beef fat which works too. I prefer the taste of pork fat with game meat.

Once you’ve got the meat blended to your taste, it’s just a matter of mixing in the right spices, and you’ll have Cajun-style venison burgers your whole family will enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground Vension (80/20 venison/pork)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon seasoning salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon minced garlic (dehydrated)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups of your shredded cheese of choice
  • 4 hamburger buns or rolls
Cajun venison burger spices
Here are the spices I used

Directions

  1. Take 1 lb ground venison (80/20 venison/pork) and add all seasonings and egg into a bowl.
  2. Mix until evenly distributed.
  3. Add your cheese and continue mixing. (Cheese should be at room temperature).
  4. Form the meat into 4 patties (3/4 to 1 inch thick)
  5. Pan-fry at a medium-high temperature for about 4 minutes per side until they’re well-seared and reach your desired doneness.

I’m not a fan of any undercooked meat, especially game meat. I recommend cooking your venison burgers to an internal temperature of 140°F, at a minimum.

The burger pictured above was cooked to about 160°F, and it still turned out juicy and delicious. This is because I mixed in the cheese rather than laying a slice over the top of the patty.

The additional fat from the cheese also helps to keep the burgers juicy.

Add The Finishing Touch

Place them on hamburger buns or rolls, and garnish them any way you like. Serve them along with side dishes of your choice.

All that’s left is to enjoy them!
